Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk

We’ve got a ton of great new updates on various Marvel properties today, so let’s skip the big preamble and just get right to the good stuff.

Mark Ruffalo on a New Hulk Movie

One of the best things about The Avengers was Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of the Incredible Hulk. Marvel’s already taken two cracks at giving the green goliath his very own film franchise, and both have met with disappointing results. Ruffalo’s turn as the character was so impressive that people actually got excited about another potential reboot.

MTV recently broached the subject of another Hulk movie with the actor – and in his view, it doesn’t look good.

“I think they don't really know where to go [with the character]."

If that’s true, it’s a strange idea. The Hulk has been around for a long time, and there are a lot of great stories in that part of the Marvel Universe. Allow me to help out: Planet Hulk. You’re welcome, Marvel.

Joss Whedon Talks S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Show

While the Hulk seems destined to continue to be little more than a part of The Avengers, we’ve got some new news on the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. series that should make the bad news easier to swallow.

Joss Whedon spoke to MTV recently and dropped some hints about what we could expect from the show.

First up, MTV reports that the series will mostly focus on new characters – so those expecting see a lot of Sam Jackson should probably adjust their expectations a bit. He explains the rationale behind that decision:

"It needs to be its own thing," said Whedon. "It needs to be adjacent [to the Marvel Comic Universe] but you don't want to do a show where you're constantly going, 'Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.' You want them to do their own thing."

He goes on to explain what will make S.H.I.E.L.D. different from the rest of the MCU and what drew him to the project.

“Well, what does S.H.I.E.L.D. have that the other superheroes don't? And that, to me, is that they're not superheroes," said Whedon. "But they live in that universe. Even though they're a big organization, that [lack of powers] makes them underdogs, and that's interesting to me."

We’re really excited to see what Whedon and company have in store for us with this series.

Ant-Man Footage May Arrive Online:

Marvel revealed some buzz-worthy early test footage from the film at Comic-Con back in July – and like most Comic-Con stuff, it never made it past the show floor. Fans who’ve longed to see that footage but didn’t make it to San Diego may finally be in luck. Marvel exec Victoria Alonso reveals to website Omelete that it could be made available to the public soon.

“What we showed at Comic-Con was a work in progress.  We’re working on finishing it, and I think you might see it.  Not sure where, but we always listen to the fans.  And if the fans demand it we make sure they get it.  I don’t know if we are going to post it online, but I don’t have [any reason] to believe we may not.”

Viggo Mortensen Not Starring in Thor: The Dark World

Alonso also discussed recent rumors floating around stating that Viggo Mortensen would play Dr. Strange in the upcoming Thor sequel.

“We would love to work with Viggo Mortensen.  I’ve been trying that for years.  But I don’t know if Viggo is even acting anymore.  I thought he wasn’t acting anymore.  It would be great to work with him in the future, but we don’t have him signed, no.”

We’re not sure how hard Alonso has been trying – because Viggo Mortensen is definitely working these days – but this would seem to indicate that rumors about him playing Dr. Strange are based on wishes more than reality. You have to admit, it would be pretty great casting if it happened, but as far as we can tell, it’s just fanboy dreaming at this stage of the game.
