This Year's Most Popular Movie-Related Halloween Costume Might Surprise You

Oct 24, 2012

Whenever I'm hanging out around little kids (and since I have two of them, this happens quite often), I take notice of the toys they're playing with and the characters they're most interested in, especially when it comes to movie-related gear. Naturally, most boys I know are obsessed with Marvel's Avengers, and it's not because of the movie so much as it is the popularity of superhero culture in general. So it's no surprise to learn via a Fandango poll that the most popular movie-related Halloween costumes this year belong to characters from The Avengers, but what is surprising is which Avenger leads the pack.

Thor. Yes, Thor. See, all these kids I notice playing with Avengers toys -- none of them seem all that interested in Thor. They don't wear Thor clothing or obsess over Thor cartoons. It's always Captain America, Spider-Man and Iron Man... not Thor. So it's kind of cool to see Thor leading the rest of the Avengers in terms of popular Halloween costumes, and it bodes well for the Thor sequel, due out next year. I do wonder, though, what it is about Thor that's putting him ahead of the usual Halloween suspects. Is it the hammer? The cool helmet? The God-like powers? What do you think?

Meanwhile, in female costumes, Anne Hathaway's Catwoman from The Dark Knight Rises leads that pack, followed closely behind by Katniss from The Hunger Games, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and costumes representing both Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron's characters from Snow White and the Huntsman.

Other popular costumes in the "classics" category include Indiana Jones, Batman, the Joker, Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz and Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Below you'll find a list of the top 10 most popular Halloween costumes inspired by 2012 movie releases for both men and women.
