This Test Footage for 'Mama' Is Creepier Than Most Finished Horror Movies

Jan 28, 2013

Earlier this month, audiences got to peek at the creepy creatures that crawl around in the dark in the Guillermo del Toro-produced film Mama. It's a feature-length version of a short that del Toro took notice of. Being the super producer that he is, and never one to ignore a scary story involving children and things that go bump in the night, he brought the Andres Muschietti-directed movie starring Jessica Chastain to theaters. The film revolves around two little girls who are discovered in the forest. They've been living there like feral children for five years, but are rescued and invited to live in the home of their uncle and his wife. Something doesn't want to let them go.

If you haven't seen the film yet, you may want to stop reading here. Otherwise, proceed to watch the video we spotted on website io9, which reveals some chilling test footage. The ghostly woman at the heart of the story is pictured. Javier Botet played the part of Mama. He has a genetic disorder called Marfan syndrome, which affects the connective tissue and makes people very tall and spindly throughout their limbs and fingers. Fans of the band Deerhunter may know that frontman Bradford Cox has the same disorder. Enjoy some black-and-white footage from Mama that may be even scarier than the film itself, below.
