This is Not a TV or a Piece of Furniture -- It's IKEA Blowing Your Mind! (Updated with More Details)

May 16, 2012

In the race to create the next great home entertainment option, IKEA has one-upped the competition by introducing the UPPLEVA, which is a smart LED HDTV (complete with built-in Blu-ray player), a 2.1 sound system and a piece of furniture all in one piece (plus wireless subwoofer). They'll be rolling this out in Europe to start with this fall (Sweden, Italy, France, Poland, Denmark, Spain, Norway and Portugal), with more countries being added in the spring of 2013.

This definitely fits a more European sensibility, but we totally see this selling in larger cities like New York where space is always limited. Those who take great pride in building only the best surround-sound home entertainment systems won't find it in this, but if you're a casual TV and movie-watcher at home who wants to a) save on space, and b) own a Smart TV so you can do all your internet browsing and TV watching in one place, then this might be for you. According to Engadget, this will be retailing in Sweden for about $960, though we don't know how big of a TV that gets you. Check out the video below for more.

Would you buy this?

Update: Engadget brings us additional details on IKEA's new Uppleva HDTV in that it will be available in sizes ranging from 24 to 46 inches and will retail "around $960" in Europe. That base price is most likely for the 24-inch TV, so expect it to go up from there. The home entertainment unit, which includes HDTV, blu-ray player, storage and wireless subwoofer, will arrive in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden next month, before being rolled out to other European countries later this year and then, eventually, the US in 2013. Assorted applications will also be available depending on region, like YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, games, music, VOD apps and more.
