A 40-ish Dad Fact-Checks Judd Apatow's 'This is 40' Trailer

A 40-ish Dad Fact-Checks Judd Apatow's 'This is 40' Trailer

Aug 07, 2012

Toward the end of the latest preview for Judd Apatow's next film, This Is 40, the trailer tells us that this isn't just their story, it's "everyone's story." But is that really true? Is this hilariously tragic look inside the lives of a married couple approaching 40 with two kids  similar to the lives of others in their position? Seeing as I'm a married father of two children who's inching closer to 40 with each passing day (I'm currently 35), I thought it might be fun to run through the trailer to see if any of it was actually my story too, as the trailer suggests.

First, here's the trailer (which I loved)...

Okay, now let's dissect the trailer from the point of view of a married father with two kids who's approaching 40.

True or False: Two friends imagining what their lives would be like if their wives just disappeared, without something horrible or violent happening to them.

True: While us married guys love our spouses, I have found myself imagining a world in which I am not married on more than one occasion, usually while having drinks with a buddy while our wives scream at children in the next room.

True or False: If a man goes to the bathroom more than normal, his wife will storm in and viciously interrogate him.

True: When you're married, you'd be surprised how often you wind up having lengthy conversations about your bowel movements with your significant other. And yes, on more than one occasion she has interrupted me to ask questions related to why I'm taking so long in the bathroom.

True or False: Kids get rowdy in the car while the parents are driving, and then often insult their parents by putting them (and their physical appearance) down, sometimes in a public place.

True: Kids are rowdy. Kids are mean. They don't always want to be rowdy or mean, and they probably won't stay rowdy and mean, but there will be a time when, yes, you're kids will be both rowdy and/or mean.

True or False: The married friend yells at his stoner friend because he has responsibilities and doesn't have time to fool around and get "baked" like they used to.

True: I think I just had this argument last night.

True or False: Other kids' parents are insane and will berate you in front of the principal should your kids get into a minor scuffle at school.

True: All parents raise their kids differently, which means the chances of running into one or more parents who are completely off-the-wall insane (like Melissa McCarthy's character appears to be in the film) during your child's schooling years are pretty great. I know five of them.

True or False: Your parents will continually make you feel guilty.

True: This begins when you're three and it never ends.

True or False: The couple approaching 40 will often stop, look around, and figure out a way to live a more satisfying life as individuals, and as a couple.

Maybe: With the divorce rate as high as it is in America, sadly many couples do not do this. They may make an attempt, but it doesn't always end well. Perhaps, if anything, the movie will give us some insight into the ways in which a couple who are stuck in a rut can pull themselves together and rediscover not only love for one another, but also happiness in their lives. Either that or it'll end with the notion that parents with kids are all inevitably doomed.

True or False: This is everyone's story.

False: This is impossible to answer without knowing everyone, but I will say that it's damn close to being mine.

This is 40, which stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprising their roles as the married couple from Knocked Up, hits theaters on December 21.
