It's October, which means we're writing a lot about horror movies. You don't mind, right? One of my personal favorite horror movies is The Silence of the Lambs, which was one of those rare scares that broke through the Oscar stuffiness and scored multiple Academy Awards. Jonathan Demme's 1991 adaptation of the Thomas Harris novel managed to ooze creepiness out of every square inch of its runtime, as we shuffle alongside gutsy FBI cadet Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) in her pursuit of an elusive serial killer who skins women.
Even creepier than Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) chewing off body parts and Buffalo Bill's freakishly erotic dance in front of a mirror are these hilariously disturbing behind-the-scenes images featuring director Demme and some of the cast having a bit of fun with the freakshow that is their movie. My personal favorite is a toss-up between Demme and a crew member smiling and posing with a disfigured female suit, and the shot of Brooke Smith (as kidnap victim Catherine Martin) posing with a stuffed-animal version of the dog Precious. Shiver.
