There's More of 'The Matrix' On the Way, But It's Not What You Think

There's More of 'The Matrix' On the Way, But It's Not What You Think

Mar 15, 2017

So much for Keanu Reeves having ideas for The Matrix 4. There will be no continuation of the franchise as we know it, but there will be more Matrix movies in the near future. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is rebooting the property, which began as a groundbreaking little sci-fi sensation in 1999 then spawned two sequels, both in 2003. Here's what we know:

Let's start with the most important question: are Lana and Lilly Wachowski involved?

Reportedly, the siblings, who wrote and directed all three movies, currently have no involvement with the "relaunch," as it's being called. They could wind up giving their blessing and recieve excutive producer credits later, but that's the situation for now.

If it's being referred to as a "relaunch," could that mean there might not be a full retread?

Possibly, but no details are known yet. There is talk of a new actor playing Neo, Reeves's role, however, so we shouldn't expect anything too different if at all.

Who is that actor being talked about to play Neo?

Michael B. Jordan, who has some experience filling used shoes. He's been the Human Torch in a Fantastic Four reboot and the title character in the Rocky reboot-sequel Creed. He's also been attached to another Thomas Crown Affair remake. But it's really too early to be casting.

What stage is this thing at so far?

Warner Bros. has a writer, Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last StandThe Avengers), working on a treatment. That's a very early stage.

Is the studio just looking for mega-franchise potential?

You bet they are. At least, that's what THR claims with hint of such things as a young Morpheus prequel, an aim to mimic what Disney and Lucasfilm are doing with Star Wars.

So could it be that that Jordan is actually being eyed to play young Morpheus?

We can't count anything out for now. Perhaps Warner Bros. wants to shoot back to pre-Neo days of the universe and then move forward to an eventual straight Matrix remake. Just like in "the Matrix," everything is possible.

What if we want to see more of Reeves as Neo and Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus?

It's not that, but you can check both actors reunited in John Wick: Chapter 2, currently in theaters. They'll likely be back together for John Wick: Chapter 3, as well.

If the studio is planning a redo of The Matrix after only 18 years, should we expect a Harry Potter reboot announcement in 2019?

Obviously this can't be known, and it's off topic a bit, but we'd have to wonder if it's about a reboot greenlit 18 years after the previous version began or 14 years after it ended. The latter would keep us safe from news of a Harry Potter restart until 2025.
