Hugh Jackman Reveals Who He'll Fight in 'The Wolverine'

Jul 22, 2011

Hugh Jackman as WolverineFox is having a big Comic-Con this year, generating lots of buzz from the show floor with their unveiling of the poster and “sizzle reel” for In Time and the first official shot from Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel/reboot/remake/standalone project Prometheus.

The news didn’t stop there, though. Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, was also in attendance and he revealed some obvious (at least if you read the Wolverine comics) news about who he’s squaring off against in the upcoming The Wolverine.

Jackman turned up at the Real Steel panel yesterday, and during the course of events, started talking about his upcoming projects. Naturally, when The Wolverine came up, he was only too eager to talk about it. The actor had this to say, “I will be filming Wolverine 2 in October. Chris McQuarrie has written a fantastic script and it should turn out really good. I’ll fight the Silver Samurai in it so that should be exciting. Most of the filming will take place in Japan.”

So, it’s now official – Wolverine will square off against The Silver Samurai in the upcoming film from James Mangold. The character is the half-brother of Wolverine’s love interest – Mariko Yashida – and he doesn’t take kindly to his sister dating a gaijin. He has the ability to infuse his sword with a mutant energy-powered Tachyon field that can slice through anything – except Adamantium, which just so happens to be what Wolverine’s skeleton is made of.

The Chris Claremont-penned story comic book story arc has always been a fan favorite, so we’re pleased to see McQuarrie and Mangold are planning to bring it to the big screen. And while we remain disappointed that Darren Aronofsky isn’t directing, we’re hoping Mangold can deliver the Wolverine films have been clamoring for – while making us forget about the dreadful X-Men Origins: Wolverine in the process.
