'The Wolverine' Finally Gets a Release Date

Feb 07, 2012

20th Century Fox has gone back and forth with the follow-up to its X-Men Origins: Wolverine, first with Darren Aronofsky as its director, and now with James Mangold (Knight & Day) behind the camera. With all that sorted out -- and star Hugh Jackman appropriately, well, jacked -- it's time to set a release date for this sucker, which apparently they have. According to Box Office Mojo, The Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26th, 2013, sliding into a late-July spot that's been friendly to comic book characters like Batman and Captain America in the past.

The script, which at one point was rumored to be R-rated, will follow Wolverine to Japan where he's suffering from amnesia and trying to make sense of his world and surroundings -- all while fighting samurais, the Japanese underworld and Silver Samurai. It's loosely based on one of the most popular Wolverine stories ever told, and it seems to be the one the fans want most. Will Fox be able to deliver a PG-13 rated version and still satisfy fan hunger? It's definitely possible, and the success of both X-Men: First Class and Rise of the Planet of the Apes gives us a lot more confidence in a studio known for interfering a little too much when it comes to their geek properties.

What say you? Excited about The Wolverine? Can Fox make up for the mistakes made with X-Men Origins: Wolverine?
