With production about to begin on The Wolverine (remember him?), 20th Century Fox is firming up a slew of Japanese actors to square off against Hugh Jackman in the Japan-set sequel, which finds Wolverine battling Silver Samurai and members of the Yakuza criminal underworld, as well as a bout of amnesia and a strong case of star-crossed love.
Will Yun Lee ( who plays darker roles in the upcoming remakes of Red Dawn, Total Recall) will star as Silver Samurai, with Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima filling in as various Yakuza crime family members, with the exception of Okamoto, who will be playing Wolvy's love interest -- a girl being forced to marry another crime boss, hence the star-crossed lover angle. James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) is directing, with The Wolverine arriving in theaters on July 26, 2013.
As far as Wolverine storylines go, his Japanese adventure (inspired by a story in the comics written by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller) is definitely one of the most popular with fans, and the perfect one to tell coming off a rather unsuccessful X-Men Origins: Wolverine. As long as it stays focused and doesn't get too cluttered with other characters, this sequel definitely has the potential to bring us a unique adventure we haven't yet seen from any of the X-Men movies.
