'The Thing' Gets Its First Freaky Trailer

Jul 14, 2011

Teaser poster for The Thing prequelBeing that many of us here at Movies.com hold John Carpenter’s The Thing in very high regard (I’ll go so far as to say it’s one of the greatest horror films of the past fifty years), we’ve been pretty nervous about Universal’s remake/prequel. We’re trying to be positive, though – after all, Carpenter’s version was a remake and it turned out pretty well, so we’re trying to give Matthis van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel the benefit of the doubt.

The first trailer for the film is now online – and it’s not bad. Van Heijningen’s take on the origin of the monster from beyond the stars who can mutate into any lifeform it comes into contact with seems to ape the style and tone of Carpenter’s version quite nicely. Sure, it’s got a few more jump-scares based on the trailer, but the feeling of isolation and dread seems to be present and accounted for.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton star in the prequel, which tells the story of what happened at the Norwegian base camp after they unearthed the extra terrestrial lifeform buried in the Antarctic ice. We still have some concerns (the film went back for reshoots to punch up the special effects, which is always a cause for unease), but at least the trailer uses some of the classic Morricone score. We won’t know how the finished film turns out until The Thing lands in theaters this October, but have a gander at the trailer and see what you think in the meantime.
