Gareth Evans took the action world by storm with the release of his 2011 film The Raid. Can he and star Iko Uwais do it again in a sequel? If this new trailer for The Raid: Berendal is any indication, the answer is yes.
The follow-up, which is an official Sundance 2014 selection, picks up right where the first film ends – but rather than task Uwais’ Rama with cleaning up another tenement full of dangerous criminals, the new film places him in prison as he tries to infiltrate one of the most dangerous gangs in Jakarta. Needless to say, lots of ass-kicking ensues.
The new clip does a really nice job of whetting our appetite for the new film without giving away any of the feature’s sure-to-be plentiful “holy crap!” moments. Looks like there’s a bit more story happening this time out, and maybe even some actual character development – two things I felt the first film was lacking. The inclusion of these elements next to the crazy fight choreography could make Berendal one for the ages.
We’ll have to wait until next month to find out what critics think, but the good news is the rest of you action fanatics can weigh in on the topic sooner rather than later. Sony Pictures Classics has already set a release date of March 28 for the film here in America.
As we all count down the days until the film’s official arrival, let us know what you think of this new clip.
