'The Knick' Trailer: Steven Soderbergh and Clive Owen Take the Hospital Drama in a Bloody New Direction

The Knick clive owenSteven Soderbergh promises to deliver us from the lame soap opera stylings of network television’s hospital dramas with The Knick — and there’s a new teaser trailer to get excited about. The bloody, 30-second clip highlights Clive Owen’s Dr. John W. Thackery, who is sporting a delightfully dandy mustache, and features his voiceover discussing the “treatment of the human body.”

The action takes place at New York's Knickerbocker Hospital during the early part of the 20th century, and it’s nice to see that Soderbergh and company won’t be holding back on the red stuff. The field of medicine was a gory occupation during the time period. Thousands of wounded troops required amputations, prosthetic-limb designs were still being refined, the 1918 flu pandemic killed millions the world over, and doctors weren’t even treating patients with antibiotics until the mid-20th century.

Soderbergh's so-called "retirement" has found the filmmaker turning to cable televsion for the creative freedoms it affords — and we couldn't be happier. Can the director do for Cinemax what series like Breaking Bad have done for AMC and countless shows have achieved for HBO?
