First Look: 'The Muppets' Sequel Reveals Its Title and These Brand-New Images

Jan 30, 2013

Kermit the Frog and his Muppet companions are currently hard at work shooting The Muppets… Again! in London, England – but everyone’s favorite amphibian recently found time to sit down with EW to talk about what fans can expect from the gang’s latest adventure.

The film, which is due to hit theaters on March 21, 2014, seems to owe a bit of a nod to The Great Muppet Caper. In this new outing, Kermit becomes the victim of mistaken identity when his doppleganger, Constantine, launches a plan to steal a huge diamond.

Director James Bobin reveals that he always wanted to do a ‘70s-style heist film, and adding Henson’s beloved characters to the mix gives him an opportunity to not only craft an elaborate crime, but to sprinkle in musical numbers and comedy as well. Kermit reports the full gang is back for the sequel, and that they’ll be joined by Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais.

Speaking of Gervais, here’s what the frog had to say about his comedic costar.

“Ricky Gervais is kind of like a Muppet, if you think about it. He fits right in. He’s about our size. I actually think when this film ends it’s going to be hard to get rid of him. He keeps following me back to my hotel in London, which is very strange, but we’re thrilled to have him.“

Here's a just-released image of Gervais with the Kermit and Piggy:

Kermit then reveals how he spends some of his downtime. You’ll probably not be surprised to learn he’s not a Hollywood regular.

“…you know, when we’re not working, we go and do our separate things. We don’t live in a big house or anything. I don’t really spend a lot of time in Hollywood. I go back to the swamp. Piggy usually won’t come to the swamp with me—she just goes off with my credit card and I don’t see her for months. It’s very strange.”

The actor also reveals that while he and villainous Constantine are identical in appearance, Kermit himself will not be playing dual roles in the feature.

“We talked about putting me in makeup and having me play both roles, but we decided Constantine needed to be a guy who could do a Russian accent. And, you know, I’m a pretty accomplished actor and all, but besides the Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island films, I’ve only really ever played myself. The great thing is, I have like 3,000 relatives back in the swamp, so it was quite easy to find a frog who could play Constantine.”
