This Year's 'Argo'? See the First Trailer and Images from George Clooney's 'The Monuments Men'

Aug 08, 2013

He helped produce Argo last year and it won Best Picture, but now this year George Clooney has stepped behind (and in front of) the camera for another similar heist tale, except instead of rescuing people in hostile territory, they're going in for the art. In The Monuments Men (due out this December), Clooney leads an amazing ensemble cast (Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Bob Balaban, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin) in a telling of the real-life story about a group of museum directors, curators and art historians who are sent behind German enemy lines during World War II in an attempt to rescue priceless works of art before Hitler's troops destroy it all.

The film has a lot in common with last year's big winner (oddball team, real-life story, rescue attempts), and with that cast we have no doubt that some great performances will pour of of this thing once it washes up on American shores. Check out the first trailer and images from the film below and, heck, we wanna throw it an Oscar nod based solely on the anticipation that builds from seeing these images of the crew. Murray? Goodman? Damon? Clooney? Balaban? We're so there.

Official Synopsis: Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action-thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.
