The Dark Knight Rises

Lego: The Piece of Resistance: Hoping, perhaps, to add authority to an animated film that sounds like one long commercial, Warner Bros. has hired Morgan Freeman (above, in The Dark Knight Rises, with Marion Cotillard) and Elizabeth Banks as voice actors for Lego: The Piece of Resistance, due for release in February 2014. Chris Pratt and Will Arnett are already onboard; that premise, by the way, revolves around an ordinary Lego mini-figure, mistaken identity, an evil tyrant and, we’re fearing, even more product placement than usual. Leonardo DiCaprio: It’s a new dream team! Old running buddies Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire will team with Tom Hardy to produce an untitled movie about animal trafficking. Based on an idea by Hardy, the drama would look at all angles of the story, from poachers in Africa to the fashion industry in Europe, similar to Steven Soderbergh's Traffic. It’s not clear whether the star producers would act in the film as well. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Beached: In a move that sounds even sillier than 1985’s Gymkata (with Olympics gymnast Kurt Thomas as a martial arts hero), Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) will develop Beached with plans to direct. The film, in development since 1997 (?!), will follow “a chubby 4-year-old child who falls overboard during a family outing, is raised by whales and goes on to become an Olympic swimmer.” The success of the London Olympics is blamed credited for the revival of the project. The Master Trailer: Set to debut at the upcoming Venice Film Festival before heading to the Toronto fest and then U.S. theaters on September 14, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master has already generated considerable buzz. Watch Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams in the explosive new trailer below. [IMDB via The Film Stage]
