I remain doubtful that anyone will ever make a killer-robot film better than James Cameron’s first two Terminator films, but that hasn’t stopped a lot of sci-fi filmmakers from giving it the old college try. Caradog James is the latest to tackle the subject of robots run amok in this thriller The Machine – and today we’ve got a new trailer for your perusal.
Caity Lotz stars as the killer automaton in the new feature – and while it instantly reminded me a bit of Kristanna Loken’s portrayal in Terminator 3, I’m okay with that. While it may not really be possible to improve upon the first two Terminator films, everything that came after could certainly be made better.
The clip hits all the usual marks for this subgenre – weaponized robot is created, people become scared of it, it becomes self-aware, and it brings some serious pain to everyone who winds up in its path. Traditional to a fault for sure – but it still looks fairly engaging.
Here’s the official synopsis for the film:
“Britain is in a Cold War with a new enemy, and the Ministry of Defense is on the brink of developing a game-changing weapon. Lead scientist Vincent McCarthy (Toby Stephens) provides the answer with his creation, ‘The Machine’ - an android with unrivaled physical and processing skills. When a programming glitch causes an early prototype to destroy his lab, McCarthy enlists artificial intelligence expert Ava (Caity Lotz) to help him harness the full potential of a truly conscious fighting machine.”
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think – will The Machine tide you over until we get a new Terminator film, or is this subgenre in need of a total reboot at this point?
