Disney News: 'The Incredibles 2' and 'Cars 3' Moving Forward; 'Pirates 5' Maybe Not; 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Timeline

Mar 18, 2014

Disney just held its annual shareholders meeting, which is where CEO Bob Iger let loose a volley of movie announcements. Details are sparse, so we'll just cut right to it:

- The Incredibles creator Brad Bird is actively working on the story for The Incredibles 2. This is something people have asked about for years, and while the film doesn't have a date yet, Iger mentioning its development is the first official sign that Pixar is moving forward on the project.

- Pixar is also developing Cars 3, though that's probably not a great surprise to anyone.

- Star Wars: Episode VII will be set "30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI -- Return of the Jedi, and will star a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces." It will start filming in May of 2014 for an expected December 18, 2015 release date.

- Pirates of the Caribbean 5 has been put on hold. The film already had the directors of Kon-Tiki attached, but according to today's shareholder call, the film has still not been green-lit. You can probably blame the world's complete indifference to The Lone Ranger on Disney's hesitance to make another megabudget Johnny Depp movie, even if the last Pirates still made a ton of money overseas.

Also, it's unrelated to Disney's news, but right before Iger's call news hit that Sofia Coppola was in negotiations to direct a live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Disney doesn't exclusively own that property though (it's based on an old Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale), so Universal Pictures will be sheparding along this project, which is currently being rewritten by Edward Scissorhands writer Caroline Thompson. Universal most recently found success adapting another fairy tale in the live-action format with Snow White and the Huntsman.
