The Company Men

Kevin Costner: As previously rumored, Kevin Costner has now been confirmed to play a trainer/mentor in the still untitled Jack Ryan prequel starring Chris Pine; Kenneth Branagh will play the villain and direct. Costner will also play the same character in Without Remorse, a planned spin-off set in the same universe created by author Tom Clancy; Tom Hardy might star in that one. And Costner might even star in his own movie as the character, named William Harper. [Deadline]

The Dark Tower: The on-again, off-again project to adapt Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is still up in the air. Late on Monday afternoon, it was reported that Warner Bros. had passed on the ambitious plans by director Ron Howard to convert the nine-book series into three feature films and two TV miniseries. A few hours later, another potential backer emerged: Media Rights Capital, a company that backed this summer's hit comedy Ted and the upcoming Elysium. Stay tuned! [Showblitz/Deadline]

Todd Phillips: The director of Old School and The Hangover is ready to make a dramatic turn in his career. Todd Phillips is in talks to direct The Gambler, which would be his first serious drama after making a series of comedies. Martin Scorsese was formerly attached to the project, a remake of Karel Reisz’s 1974 film starring James Caan as a literature professor with a dangerous addiction to gambling; writer James Toback based it on his own experiences. The Impossible Trailer: The first trailer for The Impossible, starring Ewan MacGregor and Naomi Watts, is sobering as it dramatizes the true story of a family vacationing in Thailand in 2004 when the devastating tsunami hit. The film is in theaters on December 21. [You can see the trailer in glorious HD at Apple.]
