Watch: Unsettling New Spanish Trailer for 'The Impossible' from the Director of 'The Orphanage'

Apr 20, 2012

Juan Antonio Bayona earned a lot of fans with his remarkable feature film debut, the Guillermo del Toro-produced The Orphanage, a genuinely freaky haunted house film which currently has an English-language remake brewing with The Mothman Prophecies' Mark Pellington at the helm. For his second feature, Bayona left the horror genre behind, but that doesn't mean his film looks anything less than terrifying. Only, in this case the chills don't come from creepy ghost kids, they come from the real life horrors of the 2004 tsunami that devastated coast lines all over Southeast Asia. It's called The Impossible, stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, and looks nothing short of gripping.

As far as plot goes, it's relatively simple. Watts and McGregor are on vacation in Thailand with their three sons. Everything is paradise until, well, we all know what happens next. It doesn't appear as if the film is based on any one family's story, rather it's a portrait of survival under inconceivable circumstances.

Unfortunately, the trailer is dubbed in Spanish, but the actual film will be in English. Either way, the visuals here are so powerful you don't need to understand a word of it to know and fear what's going on.

Also, here's the first (and still Spanish) teaser for the film, which hits Spanish theaters in October, but is currently without a US release date.
