I'm just going to jump the gun and go ahead and say no, Joe Dante's 1981 horror classic that mixes sex, serial killers and werewolves in all the best ways has not been done justice by The Howling: Reborn. But, to be fair, I would have given that same answer without having watched the trailer (thanks to SYTD for the find) for this Joe Nimziki-directed, Anchor Bay-produced reboot. The Howling is simply too special to be honored by a remake that is clearly just cashing in on its title and the current werewolf craze.
Fortunately for Nimziki and Anchor Bay, The Howling: Reborn actually doesn't look too terrible. Oh, it doesn't look exceptional either, but at least it looks like it's tried to keep its legit horror roots instead of getting a hideous Twilight-inspired dye job. Judging from the trailer alone, it appears to be on par with Warner Bros.' straight-to-video pseudo-sequels to another beloved '80s horror flick, The Lost Boys: cheesy but passable, late night cable-quality horror.
At least it's got to be better than MTV's Teen Wolf remake, right?
