The Host is one of the coolest giant-monster movies ever made, and if you haven't seen it, you really, really should. Directed by Joon-ho Bong (Memories of Murder, the forthcoming Snowpiercer), it's about a giant, mutated salamander that emerges from the river and onto one of South Korea's most densely populated areas. The military quarantines the city, but not before the beast takes a young girl, sending her family on a mission of either rescue or revenge.
There's been talk of an American remake off and on since the original hit in 2006, but it doesn't seem to have materialized into anything. A Korean-made sequel, however, has been quietely moving forward. Not a ton is known about The Host 2, but one of the visual-effects houses working on it happened to release a clip from the film online. It looks like it's setting up an identical monster-kidnapping scenario, which is a bit disappointing in the long run, but we can't complain too much when the clip is this badass.
And how great are those VFX, anyway? Those of us who were worried that a sequel would be a watered down version of the original can rest easy knowing it'll at least look great.
And while we're here talking about The Host, here's a French cheese commercial that's clearly paying homage to the Korean monster movie. Though the creature here was designed by Jordu Schell, who was the lead designer on Avatar.
