'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' Trailer Highlights Epic Battles and Giant Creatures

Prepare yourselves Tolkien fans, because it's one year later and here comes another Hobbit movie. The first sequel in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy has arrived in the form of this extended trailer that definitely seems to want to highlight the many fantastical action sequences included within. While the first Hobbit took its time with introductions and was fond of chewing gorgeous scenery, this next chapter -- titled The Desolation of Smaug -- comes off a bit grittier and angrier, and if it's in any way to be compared to the second film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, then we may be staring at the best Hobbit flick of the bunch, at least in this dude's opinion (I friggin' loved The Two Towers)

Check out the latest trailer below and let us know what you think. Does the focus on nonstop action make this sequel more appealing? The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters on December 13.

Synopsis: The film continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous Mirkwood Forest. After escaping capture by the dangerous Woodland Elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all—a creature more terrifying than any before, which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself—the Dragon Smaug.
