Reel TV: Amblin Is Giving 'The Haunting of Hill House' A New Version on Netflix

Apr 10, 2017

If you need help remembering the difference between The Haunting of Hill House and House on Haunted Hill, just remember that one is a Hollywood horror classic that got a big, splashy remake in 1999 and the other is a...a Hollywood horror classic that got a big, splashy remake in 1999. Okay, so they can get a bit confusing on the surface. But now you can also add the distinction that The Haunting of Hill House is the one that was remade a second time, this time for the small screen.

Or, rather, we should say re-adapted, since this new The Haunting of Hill House is going back to the original source material of Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel about a scientist who hopes to prove the existence of the supernatural by investigating a supposedly haunted house. This new version is being produced by Amblin TV and has taped Mike Flanagan to write and direct and the series, which will span a 10 episode season.

This new Haunting will be heading straight to Netflix, which has developed quite the affinity for Flanagan. His home invasion movie Hush did quite well on the streaming service, and since then they've let Flanagan adapt Stephen King's Gerald's Game. This will be by far his largest project to date, though, so we're curious to see what the rising genre star does with the material.
