Platinum Dunes' Remake of Hitchcock's 'The Birds' Lands a Director

Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes production company are at it again – prepping to remake another classic film that’s sure to have cinephiles howling in outrage.

Bay, who’s earned the Internet’s ire for his company’s reboot of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, apparently really loves remakes and making people dislike him. Platinum Dunes has been a big player in the horror-remake business (where it has tackled Tobe Hooper’s seminal The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th), and its latest stays true to its genre roots.

The company is hard at work creating a new version of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic The Birdsand now it has hired a director. Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Roojien has been chosen for the unenviable gig of trying to remake a Hitchcock film. No pressure there, Diederik – just ask Gus Van Sant how easy that is.

Hitch’s version of The Birds centered on a socialite (played by Tippi Hedren) who leaves San Francisco for northern California. She arrives and discovers that the local birds have developed a mean streak and are attacking the local citizenry. No word yet on how the Platinum Dunes updating will modernize the story, but if you listen closely, you can hear the Internet grabbing its torches and pitchforks as we speak.

What do you think? Can Platinum Dunes successfully update one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most beloved films, or is a remake of The Birds the cinematic equivalent of getting nailed with pigeon crap? Weigh in below.
