UPDATE 8/16/12: Disney has just made it official: The Avengers 2 will open on May 1, 2015.
The biggest news yesterday came in the form of Disney/Marvel officially announcing an exclusive deal with Joss Whedon through June 2015 for him to not only write and direct The Avengers 2, but also work on Marvel's planned live-action TV show, as well as the rest of their Phase 2 initiative. Obviously this is a great thing for everyone involved (including us) because the nerdy Whedon will dive in like a kid at a candy store, assisting Marvel in shaping the next few years of their cinematic slate so that it all mixes together in a way that makes sense and, perhaps most importantly, is fan friendly. What we didn't get yesterday, however, was a release date for The Avengers 2.
Or did we?
According to the press release, Whedon's exclusive deal with Marvel is through the end of June 2015, which means The Avengers 2 will be arriving in theaters before then. Considering the fact that Disney began this summer with The Avengers -- and it paid off tremendously for them -- it would make sense for The Avengers 2 to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2015, officially kicking off the summer moviegoing season. This release date then gives Whedon a full two months to continue doing press for the sequel as Marvel and Disney decide whether to bring him back for Phase 3, which, potentially, would be announced at San Diego Comic-Con that July.
Of course none of this is official yet, and with the 2015 summer release schedule pretty wide open, there's even a chance Disney will make this their big, splashy Memorial Day weekend movie. Either way expect The Avengers 2 to arrive in May 2015.
