'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Trailer Opens Up a Whole New Universe for the Marvel Superhero

Dec 05, 2013

Once again we have a Marvel superhero movie kicking off the 2014 summer movie season (though with films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier arriving before it in April, it's pretty easy these days to question when, exactly, that season actually begins). Due out on May 2, 2014, the first full trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has just arrived online, and you can check it out below.

What this trailer definitely does is get you excited for what appears to be a very cool Spider-Man movie, but this first look also teases a lot more. Not only do we see Electro (Jamie Foxx), the film's primary villain, and a brief glimpse of Rhino (Paul Giamatti) in some kind of giant mech suit, but they also tease Harry Osborn's transformation into some form of Goblin (probably Hobgoblin), as well as other villains like Doc Ock and Vulture. Those are their weaponized suits teased in the image below, which we're told is from the film's postcredits scene).

We've heard rumors that this Spider-Man movie would open up a larger universe for the character, and this trailer -- which is much darker than the light, amusing, playful footage previewed at Comic-Con -- gets the ball rolling by showing you just what's going on over there at OsCorp. We got a taste in the first movie, but according to this -- and to Harry Osborn (Dane Dehaan) himself -- they're working on a lot of top-secret manipulation projects, all of which are just itching to find their masters and wreak havoc on New York City and Spider-Man. There shouldn't be any doubt now that all of this will ultimately lead to a Sinister Six movie, pitting Spider-Man against many of his greatest enemies. If you don't believe us, more proof below.

If you're a Spider-Man nerd, this movie seems like it's going to be your happy place. May 2 can't come soon enough.

Official Synopsis: We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield).

For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.
