So much for taking a five-year break (or more) between films, as Terrence Malick has suddenly decided to return to making movies in full force by taking on not one, but two new movies in 2012. Just announced via press release was word that FilmNation Entertainment will help handle international sales and distribution on two new Malick films to be shot back-to-back in 2012. Both films will star Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett, however the release does state that they are not related to one another.

The first, Lawless, stars Bale, Blanchett, Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett, while the second, Knight of Cups, stars Bale, Blanchett, and Isabel Lucas. Naturally plot details are being closely guarded as of now, however we know one of these movies, Lawless, is about a music industry personality (Bale) as Malick recently shot footage of Bale and Bennett in character at Austin City Limits. Some folks claim this may be related to a Jerry Lee Lewis biopic Malick was interested in making, but there's been no confirmation of that. No word on what Knight of Cups is about, though we'll definitely clue you in once we know more. Meanwhile, Malick's latest film, The Tree of Life, is now available on DVD/Blu-ray.

In the meantime, a question: Does Malick lose a little of his mystique by putting out so much product in such a small window? Or is he just making up for lost time?
