One of the Worst Video Game Movies in History Is Getting a Sequel in 'Tekken: A Man Called X'

Tekken movie

There's no shortage of bad movies based on video game licenses, particularly ones adapted from fighting games. When Mortal Kombat is the pinnacle of the form, well, that says pretty much everything you need to know.

Amongst the lousier titles built around popular beat-'em-ups is 2010’s Tekkenwhich was inspired by Sony’s game franchise of the same name. While it was only loosely inspired by the games (in that it had characters from the game world fighting), it still managed to earn fans’ ire for being yet another shining example of the fact that Hollywood really doesn’t understand how to adapt games for the screen.

The sad part is Tekken should have been better. It was directed by Dwight Little, who’s got a decent Hollywood resume (he helmed Halloween 4, Marked for Death, Rapid Fire and episodes of some really big television series) – but for whatever reason the film is mostly remembered for an odd scene showing off Kelly Overton’s "butt cleavage."

Undaunted by this failing, the powers behind the Tekken film are ready to move forward – with another Tekken movie. Maybe the second time is the charm?

Actor Kane Kosugi (son of ‘80s Cannon Films ninja movie icon Sho Kosugi) has revealed that he’ll be starring in the new film, which is titled Tekken: A Man Called X.

We don’t know much of anything about the plot, but we can guess it will involve the game’s “King of Iron Fist” tournament in some way, shape, or form.

The potential good news here is that Prachya Pinkaew is attached to direct. If that name’s not instantly familiar to you, he directed the Tony Jaa films Ong Bak and The Protector – two movies filled with the kind of crazy martial arts action I’d want to see in a movie based on Tekken.

Will this new Tekken right the copious wrongs of the first film? Probably not – but we’ll keep an eye out for more details on this one in the months ahead.
