Sylvester Stallone Changes His Mind; 'Expendables 2' Will Be R-Rated

Mar 19, 2012

Expendables 2 posterIf you’re at all like us (and if you’re reading the site, you probably are), then you were probably a little flummoxed by news earlier this year stating that Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables 2 was going to be rated PG-13. It didn’t make sense – how could a sequel to a film playing up the glory of over-the-top ‘80s action flicks possibly be rated with a family-friendly PG-13 score? There were stories citing Chuck Norris’ aversion to doing R-rated films for the move toward the lower mark, but whatever the reason was, Stallone even confirmed the rating in a message to AICN.

Not so fast, though – now Stallone is on the record as saying that Expendables 2 will be rated R. Stallone tells fansite StalloneZone that “after taking in all the odd rumors and hearsay, Expendables II is an R.”

We’re not sure what “rumors and hearsay” Stallone is talking about (particularly since he confirmed they were aiming for a PG-13 rating at one point…), but we don’t even care. Expendables 2 is going to be an R-rated film, full of action, violence, and the appropriate amount of F-bombs – as it should be. Of course, the rating isn’t an indicator of quality by any stretch of the imagination – but it does give Stallone more options for what he can include in the film than a PG-13 grade would afford him. We’re all in favor of that. A film like Expendables 2 should be bold and brash and over the top – and hopefully an R-rating allows the team to deliver that sort of experience.

Of course, this could all change again – the MPAA still hasn’t officially rated the feature and there’s a lot of time for tweaking the final cut before the film’s August release.

So, action fans, is this good news or is the rating unimportant to you? Share your thoughts below.
