The boys of summer have gone, but Sony Pictures is bringing them back in the dead of winter when it releases director Stacy Peralta’s skateboarding documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys and surfing doc Riding Giants on Blu-ray on January 5. Both will get a 1080p picture and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Extras on Dogtown include multi-angle sequences, webisodes, "The State of Pool Skating" with Tony Alva and Bucky Lasek, an alternate ending and a deleted scene as well as extended raw skating footage. Riding Giants has a making-of featurette, Fuel TV’s Blue Carpet Special and deleted scenes. Both movies feature insightful commentaries by Peralta and his editors as well.
Peralta—a professional skateboarder and team surfer who was one of the original Z-Boys of Venice, California—began competing with the Zs at age 11. By 19 he'd become the highest-ranked professional skater before the young entrepreneur turned his attention to directing and producing. His latest documentary, Crips and Bloods: Made in America, is not yet on Crip-ray, er, Blu-ray. Hey, don’t shoot the messenger.
