Superhero Buzz: 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Justice League' Add More Heroes

All Eyez on Me

When it comes to superhero movies, actors in leading roles usually get the lion's share of the attention. In the next couple of years, however, we'll be seeing more team-up adventures, with more superheroes sharing the screen. That means actors cast in supporting roles need to be able to shine brightly in order to stand out with their performances.

In that light, the news that Danai Gurira (All Eyez on Me, above) has been cast in Avengers: Infinity War makes a lot of sense. She's appeared as Michonne on TV's The Walking Dead for years, establishing her character as an outsider who gradually becomes a trusted insider.

The report by Deadline speculates that Gurira will portray the same character she plays in Black Panther, a female warrior named Okoye who is a member of a trusted group that guards the royal family. That has not been confirmed, however. In any event, we shouldn't have to wait too long to find out more, since Avengers: Infinity War is slated for release on May 4, 2018.

Dope

Turning from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the DC Extended Universe, last year Kiersey Clemons (Dope, center above) was confirmed to be starring in The Flash as Iris West, a journalist and friend of Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), also known as the titular character. Since then, the project has been delayed as director Rick Famuyiwa dropped out and further script changes were ordered.

While we await word on a new director, Clemons has revealed her role in another superpowered movie. In an interview with Modeliste, she says: "This November, I’m making a cameo in Justice League as Iris West and it’s the first time that you meet her before we get to see her in The Flash with Ezra Miller. It was my first time doing something so extravagant like that. We filmed in London and that’s one of my favorite places."

Justice League will open in theaters on November 17.

Danny Elfman

Speaking of Justice League, we heard recently that director Zack Snyder and producer Deborah Snyder found it necessary to step away from the project in the wake of the tragic suicide of their daughter Autumn. Joss Whedon, who committed to writing and directing Batgirl in March, agreed to step in and oversee the completion of Justice League, including some necessary reshoots as well as the final stages of the postproduction process.

Now comes word via The Hollywood Reporter that Danny Elfman (above) will compose the musical score for Justice League. Tom Holkenborg, also known as Junkie XL, had composed music for Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and was working with Snyder on the new movie.

In Hollywood it's not at all unusual for composers to be replaced late in postproduction; Elfman previously came on board Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron, for example, in its latter stages to compose additional music. Elfman has a vast amount of experience as a composer, including Tim Burton's Batman and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. We'll be able to hear the results come November.
