See the Mutant That Was Supposed to Be in 'X-Men: First Class' but Got Bumped to 'Days of Future Past'

Dec 12, 2013

There were more than a few mutants in X-Men: First Class, but the movie hardly suffered for it. It's a banner example of how to juggle a good ensemble of minor and major characters while giving everyone a nice, memorable moment. We're a little more worried about X-Men: Days of Future Past, which already looks like it has approximately 128,000 mutants from the X-Men universe crammed into it, several even having young/old duplicates from different timelines. One of those mutants is Sunspot, who was first intended to be a part of First Class.

Sunspot, who has the ability to convert solar energy into all kinds of useful powers like flight and intense heat, was originally a member of the team in First Class, but director Matthew Vaughn had to cut him out of the movie. Here he is explaining to Bleeding Cool why that had to happen:

The X-Men we used were already chosen by Bryan and Fox. In the draft they gave me all of the characters were in there. We cut Sunspot because we didn’t have enough time or money. They couldn’t make him work, he was a pain the ass.

Well it seems Bryan Singer is indeed a fan of Sunspot, because he's been cast in Days of Future Past. Adan Canto will be playing him, though it's unclear if his powered-up form will be making an appearance. We do know what that form will look like, though. Or, rather, what it would have looked like in First Class. Concept artist Josh Kao, who also designed Emma Frost's look for the last film, revealed the concept art on his website, and it looks pretty badass; like a man with a universe swirling inside him.

Looking at it, it's easy to understand why Vaughn made the call to cut him from the roster. Even if he only transformed once or twice, this is not a cheap look to pull off. Let's just hope Bryan Singer did have the budget to make it happen for Days of Future Past. We'll find out when it hits theaters on May 23, 2014.
