If the 2011 summer movie season were to end today, your top ten biggest box office earners list would look like this. As it stands right now, it doesn't look like anyone is going near the top four films, with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides holding a pretty commanding lead over the rest of the pack at $238.4 million. And though it's still a fairly tight race between Transformers 3 and Harry Potter for that top spot, chances are the third Transformers flick will remain in first place when all is said and done. Funnily enough, when you look at these big boys on a worldwide scale, it's actually Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides that's in first place, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in second and Transformers: Dark of the Moon in third.
There's still some weeks left for these films to make a drop more money (we're looking at you Captain America: The First Avenger) -- not to mention a few more films arriving in theaters this month that are sure to make a solid run at this list, like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Final Destination 5 and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. In fact, if both Final Destination 5 and Rise of the Planet of the Apes put up numbers close to that of their predecessors, then expect both of those movies to creep their way onto the final list, with X-Men: First Class, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Bridesmaids the most vulnerable.
Biggest surprises? As of right now we'd have to give that award to Bridesmaids (for being the only original comedy to make it onto the list), and Kung Fu Panda 2 and Cars 2 (for doing nowhere near the kind of business the first installments did).
Still a few more weeks to go in the summer season -- what do you think about the way the list is shaking out? And do you have any predictions for the final outcome?
