Firstly, there's no confirmation that this list of 206 films is in any way connected to Steven Spielberg, let alone a list of movies that people must watch in order to work with the man. However, that's the angle being sold across the web (and Twitter) right now, as the list -- referred to as the "Spielberg Curriculum" -- spreads from movie website to movie website (we found it via JoBlo).
Regardless of whether this is really a list of essential films put together by Steven Spielberg, it still remains a list of some pretty great films that every film lover should watch at some point. All the great directors are represented (many multiple times), like Sidney Lumet, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, John Ford, Francis Coppola, Fritz Lang, Frank Capra, and Stanley Kubrick. The list (available as a read-only Google doc) wisely highlights those films available via Instant Netflix, and is largely full of titles that came out pre-1980. The only thing missing, in our opinion, are Spielberg's own films, but something tells us you've already seen all of those.
