Following news about Raiders of the Lost Ark getting an IMAX makeover for a week run in September, Steven Spielberg spoke to Yahoo about his upcoming sci-fi story set in the aftermath of a robot uprising. The filmmaker said of the large-scale format and Daniel H. Wilson adaptation:
"I’m going to do an IMAX camera test, [both] a 2 and 3D test for my next movie Robopocalypse
, and I haven’t decided whether I’m going to use the IMAX cameras, and I haven’t decided whether it’s going to be 2D or 3D yet, but I am in September going to start doing some tests."
Effects-savvy, sci-fi spectacles seem to suit the overwhelming, 72-foot screen best — although there are a few contenders for IMAX you probably didn't consider
. The filmmaker has shot 70mm before, which is why Close Encounters of the Third Kind
is the only pre-existing film he'd consider for another conversion:
"Forty percent of that film was shot in 70 millimeters, so the conversion would look extraordinary if we ever did put it up on an IMAX screen."
As IMAX slowly seems to be taking the place of 3D, we can't help but think of all the amazing movies we'd love to see in the format — especially from the man who invented the blockbuster. We're hoping he'll change his mind about giving his older movies a revamp and bring us Jaws in glorious, gory IMAX one day.
