'King of Kong' Stars Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell Go Head-to-Head in 'Wreck-It Ralph' Game

Wreck it Ralph game Steve Wiebe

If you loved the battle between Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell in the documentary King of Kong, and have found yourself clamoring for the two to go head-to-head in another battle for video game supremacy, then yesterday was your lucky day.

Disney got the two competitive gaming titans together (Wiebe in Seattle, Mitchell in Miami) for a showdown – but the battle wasn’t waged over Donkey Kong. Instead, these two master gamers fought to become the best Fix-It Felix Jr. player in the world. For those not up to speed, Fix-It Felix Jr. is the game at the heart of Disney’s latest animated feature, Wreck-It Ralph.

In the film, the game’s “villain” (John C. Reilly) hops from one game to another after he gets tired of always being the bad guy. He then finds himself with an opportunity to be a real hero when the arcade is threatened by an all new menace.

The whole good-vs.-evil thing seems particularly relevant when it comes to Wiebe and Mitchell. King of Kong was a documentary about the two men and their quest to be the best Donkey Kong player in the world, but the film presented Wiebe as the underdog hero and Mitchell as something of a cartoonish villain. It’s a great documentary even if you don’t care much about video games. Watch the trailer below.

Disney decided a great way to promote the film was to create a playable version of the game Ralph escapes. Then, in an even more inspired move, they got Wiebe and Mitchell to play it to determine who was better.

The battle took place last night and by the time things were all said and done, Mitchell had crushed Wiebe. The final tally saw Mitchell reaching level 27 while scoring 164,000 points in the process. Wiebe managed less than half that tally, finishing on level 12 with 78,900 points.

While we can’t imagine that this will serve as inspiration for a King of Kong sequel, we can say that Billy Mitchell has added another title to his impressive list of game achievements.  In the meantime, if you’re interested in the Fix-It Felix Jr. game, you can play an online version here.
