The first trailer for Starship Troopers: Invasion didn't do much but show off one of the various power suits used in the movie. This new teaser trailer, however, gives us a pretty decent idea of what director Shinji Aramaki is bringing to the world of space marines and arachnoids that Paul Verhoeven brought to life for the first time on the big screen 15 years ago.
Unsurprisingly, Invasion doesn't look wildly different from Aramki's biggest film to date, the 2004 anime Appleseed, only a bit more industrial and a little less cartoony. Some fans may not like the aesthetic, but at least it's not quite as bubbly and stiff as Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles.
Since the trailer doesn't give us a clear look at the story or the characters, we turn to the film's official Tumblr page, which does a great job of explaining what Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, and Neil Patrick Harris' characters have been up to 10 years after the events of Verhoeven's film:
Carmen Ibanez, who flew the Rodger Young in the first movie, is now captain of the John A. Warden (the battleship I introduced in previous blogs). Carl Jenkins, now Minister of Paranormal Warfare, takes over the John A. Warden for a deep space experiment – leaving Carmen livid and ship-less. Carl brushes off her vehement objections and disappears with the ship off into the vast nebula. When Carl and the ship go radio-silent, guess who orders a rescue mission? Yep…it’s big-time general/war-hero Johnny Rico.
As for Carmen and Carl, here they are:
Starship Troopers: Invasion is expected to hit home video in the US sometime this summer.
