Disney Is Making at Least Three 'Star Wars' Spin-off Movies

May 07, 2014

There's been a flurry of Star Wars news as of late, so here's a quick catch-up of the past few weeks:

-- The first round of casting announcements for Star Wars: Episode VII have gone out, along with an image of the cast behind the scenes not in costume (see below). Those appearing in the sequel--which will pick up 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi--include Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C3PO), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Kenny Baker (R2D2), John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow. J.J. Abrams will direct and the film hits theaters on December 18, 2015.

-- Meanwhile, a new animated series called Star Wars Rebels will premiere in the fall on Disney XD. It will be set between Episodes III and IV, and will act as a sort of bridge to the new big-screen sequel trilogy. Characters from the animated series may also appear in the films, though that hasn't been confirmed.

-- Aside from Star Wars: Episode VII and Star Wars Rebels, Disney is also working on two additional sequels (Episodes VIII and IX) to be released every other year following Episode VII's debut in 2015. Expect those films to hit theaters in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

TODAY'S NEWS: Disney has confirmed it is developing at least three solo spin-off movies to arrive in theaters in between the sequels, with the first due out in 2016, then 2018 and 2020.

While this news has been banging around for awhile, the addition of a third solo spin-off film is new, with Disney chief Bob Iger admitting during a stockholders call that "at least three" are in active development.

So what are those three spin-off movies about?

We know that both Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan are working on scripts for them, and earlier rumors suggested they will be origin stories, perhaps focusing on characters like Han Solo, Boba Fett and Yoda.

No other information has been released, but considering Disney is finding lots of success with the Marvel movie universe and the way each film ties to a larger whole, expect all of these Star Wars movies to do the same. The spin-offs may be their own stand-alone movies, but we wouldn't be surprised if their roots were tied to the larger sequels (and TV shows) playing out alongside them.

What do you want to see from the spin-off movies?
