While many of us are still lamenting the loss of animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, there’s good news coming from a galaxy far, far away (aka Disney HQ) – Star Wars fans are getting a new cartoon franchise in 2014, one that covers a previously unexplored era of the universe’s history.
Disney XD will reveal Star Wars: Rebels as a one-hour special before the full launch sometime next year. The show is set in the two-decade gap between Episode III and IV in the main series continuity, and will chronicle how the Empire is consolidating its power and hunting down the last of the remaining Jedi. Unfortunately, that’s all we know about the plot. No word on how the film’s mainstay characters might fit into all of this.
We really like this idea – the time period is one we’ve always been curious about, particularly since it involves the elimination of a lot of Jedi knights. How does the Empire eradicate these mystical warriors in the span of a few decades? How did the Rebel Alliance form? The show appears set to answer these questions on-screen for the very first time.
LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy explains what fans can expect from the show:
“I couldn't be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe. I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars."
Fans interested in seeing if Rebels can live up to the hype will get their first chance later this summer. Star Wars: Rebels will make its public debut at Star Wars Celebration Europe, held from July 26-28 in Messe Essen, Germany.
Meanwhile, back in the main film galaxy, IndieWire says Jonathan Rhys Meyers has entered talks to join the still largely unannounced cast of Episode VII. This is all rumor at this point, but we could totally see the actor playing some sort of villain in the upcoming film.
