How to Watch a New 'Star Wars' Movie This Summer

Feb 05, 2014

While the world anxiously awaits more information on Star Wars: Episode VII, now due to hit theaters on December 18, 2015, we busy ourselves by obsessing over every casting rumor and plot rumor because, ya know, it's healthy and whatnot. But Star Wars fans will be happy to know they don't need to wait till December of 2015 to watch new Star Wars content. Nope, Disney is readying its animated series Star Wars Rebels for a fall 2014 debut on Disney XD, and now there's word we'll get to see a taste of Rebels even sooner.

According to a recent shareholder letter, Disney's Bob Iger said the plan for Star Wars Rebels is similar to the one for the animated Clone Wars in that Disney is going to launch the show in the form of a movie that will air on the Disney Channel this summer. There's also a plan for some Rebels-related shorts to go along with it. He says, in part:

"After months of public speculation and anticipation, we announced the official release date for the next feature film, Star Wars: Episode VII, will be December 18, 2015. So far we’ve kept the details to ourselves, but we’re thrilled with the story and committed to making an incredible movie, and we should be releasing more information as production moves forward in the coming year.

As with Marvel, the rich universe of Star Wars has tremendous creative potential for the entire company. While the world eagerly awaits Episode VII to open in theaters, we’re introducing Star Wars Rebels to television audiences this summer with a movie and a series of shorts on Disney Channel, followed by a continuing series on Disney XD. Our success in building a robust pipeline of original Star Wars content for various platforms will be an integral part of our long-term strategy to leverage the franchise across a variety of our businesses, from theme parks to consumer products."

There's nothing here to suggest this Rebels movie will also hit theaters, but Disney likes to make a big splash and this is also the first new piece of Star Wars content it will be putting out. Regardless, it's comforting to know the studio will be airing the first parts of Rebels on the more accessible Disney Channel first before transitioning it to Disney XD. Will it also put the movie in theaters for a limited run? Let's just say we wouldn't be surprised in the least if it did.

Star Wars Rebels will be set between Episodes III and IV, and track the Empire's domination across the galaxy as a small band of rebels begin to plot a rebellion. This will be the first new Star Wars content in a long, long time that uses the original trilogy as its source inspiration, and that has us completely stoked to see where they go with it.

Would you watch a Star Wars Rebels movie on the big screen if Disney released it for a limited time this summer?
