'Star Wars: Episode VII' Rumors: Which Classic Characters Are Coming Back Now?

Aug 16, 2013

The good folks at Latino Review uncovered two new and related pieces of speculation about the J.J. Abrams project this week.

Both rumors involve the potential return of characters killed off earlier in the series. I think the statute of limitations on spoilers from the original trilogy has long since expired, but if you’re one of like five people who still hasn't seen Star Wars or Return of the Jedi, look away now…

According to Latino Review’s sources, it appears as though Obi-Wan Kenobi and Emperor Palpatine could be returning alongside Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. How can this be? Well, if you thought “clones” – you’re apparently wrong.

Speculation indicates that both masters of the Force will return as ghosts in the new film – something Obi-Wan has been doing for years, but a new wrinkle for Ian MacDiarmid’s evil ruler.

According to the unnamed source:

Palpatine comes back as a Force ghost... like Obi-Wan. (Sith Lords learned similar techniques, which in some cases allowed them to physically interact with their environment.)”

That makes sense – except some purists are pointing out that Lucas himself said that Sith Lords didn’t have this ability. Would anyone really be surprised that Lucas revised his opinion and changed his mind? Even if he didn’t maybe this is screenwriter Michael Arndt’s idea, or something that came from J.J. Abrams. Lucas basically took himself out of the driver’s seat the second he took that big paycheck.

The bigger question then becomes, "Why is Palpatine back in the first place?” -- and that’s where the real bombshell comes in.

If this plays out the way the rumor suggests, the Emperor is back because he had another secret apprentice at the time of his death in Return of the Jedi. Apparently, Palpatine suspected that Darth Vader might have a change of heart and had a successor in the wings. Taking that to its logical conclusion, it seems likely that this new apprentice could very well be the main villain in the new series of films.

Of course, this is all hearsay and speculation – but it is pretty interesting.

Equally interesting are some of the tidbits surrounding Obi-Wan’s return too. It seems likely that if the character comes back as a Force Ghost, he’ll do it with Ewan McGregor playing the character. What’s more surprising is the new rumor stating that McGregor is lobbying for a stand-alone film featuring Obi-Wan in his very own adventure.

This idea makes a lot of sense – Obi-Wan is a legendary character and he certainly had more Jedi adventures than just hanging out with Liam Neeson and fighting Darth Maul. There has to be tons of fertile story ground to explore in that character’s past and McGregor has enough name recognition to carry a film centered solely on the Jedi knight. Disney hasn’t decided if this is an avenue it wants to travel, but there seems to be a lot of potential there.
