'Star Wars: Episode VII' Casts Lupita Nyong'o And A 'Game Of Thrones' Star

Jun 02, 2014

UPDATE 6/2/14: StarWars.com has just revealed that Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave) and Gwendoline Christie (Brienne on Game of Thrones) have both joined Star Wars: Episode VII. Both are amazing additions, and should hopefully help calm the cries of everyone who felt there weren't nearly enough females in the cast.

Update: For those who lamented the lack of females in the cast, new reports reveal that one major female role has yet to be cast. And for those curious about how all this casting went down, The Hollywood Reporter has a recount of who was cast and when.

The Star Wars rumors have been approaching ridiculous levels, and while many thought Disney would wait until the fan-favorite holiday of May the Fourth to reveal any major news, the new owners of George Lucas' space saga have gone ahead and revealed the first picture of the core cast all together. Here's the official cast:

John Boyega (Attack the Block)
Daisy Ridley (a relative newcommer)
Adam Driver (HBO's Girls)
Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis)
Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings
Domhnall Gleeson (About Time)
Max von Sydow (The Exorcist)
Harrison Ford (Han Solo)
Carrie Fisher (Leia)
Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker)
Anthony Daniels (C-3PO)
Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca)
Kenny Baker (R2D2)

And that's all we have for now. There's no word on who any of the new actors will be playing (though Adam Driver is rumored to be the villain), though obviously the last half of the list will be playing all of their roles from the original films.

Here's what J.J. Abrams had to say about it all:

"We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

Star Wars: Episode VII opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.
