Star Wars Blu-ray Details Announced - Our Favorite Special Features

May 04, 2011

On September 16th (and the 12th internationally), Lucasfilm ans Fox Home Entertainment will finally release all six Star Wars films on Blu-ray. Commence the obligatory (and celebratory) badmouthing of George Lucas. Damn him for giving us what we want!

Is this the final set of home entertainment Star Wars movie releases? No, not by a longshot. With all six films gearing up for 3D re-releases beginning in 2012, you can expect the six films to eventually find their way back on shelves in a 3D box set. Until then, though, this is your best bet.

What we aren't getting with this set are the original theatrical cuts for the original trilogy. That was expected, though, since Lucas does not consider those to be his complete vision. So, these will be Special Edition versions.

As for the most promising special features? Well, we get audio commentary and archival interviews with each film. Carrie Fisher looks to be the only cast member participating in the audio commentarys, though.

Disc Nine holds some new docs, including a tribute to the 501st Legion, which is a club full of costumed super Star Wars fans. There's also an Empire Strikes Back doc and one on Star Wars spoofs. Nothing else seems of that much importance, though all of it should be fun to watch.

Fact of the matter is, this release is all about getting all six films on Blu-ray. They'll be clean and clear -- and until the 3D versions are released, these will be the definitive versions for folks at home to watch.

We've posted all the details below. Is this worth a purchase?
