'Star Trek' Sequel Reveals Title and Changes to the Franchise

Sep 08, 2012

According to TrekMovie, which claims to have confirmed it through various sources, the title for the upcoming Star Trek sequel will be... Star Trek Into Darkness. Even casual Trek fans will immediately notice the absence of the colon, which has been used throughout the franchise's history (Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Nemesis and so on). While not a big deal, it is what the Internet was buzzing about overnight when this news hit, with fans focusing less on what the title means and more on why it left out the damn colon.

But colon's aside (we'll get over it, I'm sure), what does this title mean? It gives us no clues as to who the villain is (Khan?), nor what their mission is. However, it does make sense for a part two, which should up the ante considerably and provide a greater test for the characters we met in the first installment. Star Trek Into Darkness reminds us of Empire Strikes Back -- a title that tells you things may not go so well for our heroes; that whatever they face this time around could bring some serious consequences.

As Paramount begins to roll out the title in a more official capacity, perhaps we'll receive more clues as to the direction they're heading in. We know it'll stick to the flavor of the first film, with moments of action and drama mixed with that classic Trek humor, though there's still a lot to uncover and we look forward to learning additional details.

Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters on May 17, 2013 in IMAX 3D, and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
