Well let's just say we have him in that we know who's playing him, but we still don't know which character he's playing. Tonight we've learned (via Variety and Trek Movie) that Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as the villain in the new Star Trek movie. Apparently this is the role that was supposed to go to both Benicio Del Toro and then Edgar Ramirez, but now with production right around the corner a trigger had to be pulled, and it's a pretty interesting choice. Do we still think it's Khan? The change in ethnicity in their search leads us to believe it's not Khan, or, if it is, at least a different take on the character once portrayed by Ricardo Montalban.
Cumberbatch has been slowly climbing the star charts in the background of some of last year's hottest movies like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse, and he's pretty great on the British series Sherlock (watch a scene from that below, via Trek Movie). Earlier today Cumberbatch was joined by an additional casting with Noel Clarke (Doctor Who), another British actor, coming on to play a character described as "a family man with a wife and young daughter." The Star Trek sequel hits theaters (in post-converted 3D) on May 17, 2013. What do you think about the new recruits, and who do you think Cumberbatch is playing?
