J.J. Abrams to Direct 'Star Trek 2'; Sequel Delayed Till Late 2012 or Summer 2013

Jul 27, 2011

This isn't much of a surprise to anyone, but according to Deadline J.J. Abrams has officially committed himself to directing Star Trek 2, which won't make its original July 29th, 2012 release date and will instead shift to either late 2012 or summer 2013 (with the latter more likely). Abrams is now working with Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof on the script for the film, which will probably begin production in January.

Taking the summer spot once held by the Star Trek sequel will be another sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, directed by Jon M. Chu. All we know about the Trek 2 script right now is that there's a 70-page outline for the story, but no completed script. Before production begins, Abrams will still need to approve the script, which will find all of the previous film's cast members returning for another go-round the Enterprise. Orci and Kurtzman also recently admitted that they'll be making some minor design changes to the Enterprise for the sequel, though we don't expect it to change that much.

What are your hopes for the sequel? Would you like to see familiar villains like Khan pop up in this, or should they go in a completely different direction? And if this does arrive in the summer of 2013, is four years between installments a little too much time? Or is Star Trek so widely loved that it doesn't matter how much time you go between sequels?
