The calendar is ready to flip to May, which means summer blockbuster season is right around the corner. Superheroes have dominated the box office for years, and this summer looks to be no different, so naturally we’ve got all kinds of comic book news to share with you today.
First up, Fox is apparently considering following the Marvel/Disney path to the small screen. After seeing what they've done with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and their deal with Netflix, the studio is now reportedly looking into bringing The X-Men to a television near you.
Writer Simon Kinberg shed some light on Fox’s thinking in a recent Collider interview:
“We’re still in this place of figuring out what the future of the franchise will be, but when you look at S.H.I.E.L.D. to some extent and what Marvel is doing now with Daredevil and other shows on Netflix, it makes sense to tell some of these stories in TV partly because there’s just not enough screens to do all these characters, and also because the serialized format of comic books is better suited for TV, because that’s it, every week you come back to the same characters different story, and in comic books every week it’s the same characters, different story."
"I think what [Fox is] seeing now is with the proliferation of new kinds of visual and special effects, there’s a way to make these stories that doesn’t cost $300 million every time you have to make a huge movie.”
I’m all for expanding the comic book universes in small ways – so maybe this could be a good thing.
Stan Lee will be in Guardians of the Galaxy after all
Marvel fans were disappointed when it was first revealed that Stan Lee wasn’t making a cameo in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie, as the comic icon has become a bit of a fixture in the company’s films. Now everyone can breathe easy, because it turns out that Stan the Man does indeed have a small part in the film.
Lee told con-goers at the C2E2 Expo in Chicago that he’s shot a scene for the film – but can’t reveal any of the intimate details:
“I did, already. I can’t tell you what it is, but I can tell you I do not understand what it was or why I did it. It has me with a girl — a very pretty girl — that’s all I can tell you.”
