Hide Your Daughters! 'Spring Breakers' Is Getting a Sequel

May 06, 2014

Spring break really is foreverrrr — as evidenced by the news that there’s going to be a sequel to Harmony Korine’s 2012 satire about the latest MTV generation all grown up. Last year, star James Franco told press, “I don’t think Harmony really wants do to Spring Breakers 2. He’s not the one who’s been talking about it.” Now comes word that Spring Breakers: The Second Coming (whaaat?) is going to be up for grabs at this year’s Cannes Film Festival — and the film already has a team of people lined up and ready to work on it.

Jonas Åkerlund (Spun, Small Apartments) will tackle the role of director, while Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting, Filth) will script the project. We don’t know much about the upcoming cast, but producers have indicated, “It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original.” Coming up with a memorable set of new characters should be priority number one — and all the guns and bikinis they can find. We’d be lying if we didn’t admit that we’ll miss Franco’s deranged Alien — the rapper and gangster who took a group of party girls under his wing during spring break in St. Petersburg. A brief synopsis indicates the story will follow “the spring breakers doing battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.”

After the first film took home $31 million worldwide and garnered such positive reviews (or at least got people talking), we imagine the sequel will be fast-tracked if all goes well at Cannes. Can Åkerlund capture the same visual style, unhinged characterizations and social commentary of Korine’s original?
