Spike Lee Made a Michael Jackson Documentary and Here's a Clip

Jul 18, 2012

This year, there have been festivals, events, and special music releases across the globe commemorating the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson's landmark album Bad. It was a somewhat controversial release for the artist who transformed from a soft-spoken, teen idol into an edgier and aggressive frontman.

One famous fan is celebrating by preparing to work on a documentary about the much-loved work. Spike Lee — who according to The Playlist is a life-long admirer of the late musician and hosts an annual party in Prospect Park on M.J.'s birthday — will be directing the feature. We've shared a video preview below, featuring the director and choreographer for Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel," which relates the power of the pop icon's vocals and screen presence. Expect to see interviews with Martin Scorsese — who directed the video for the smash hit "Bad" in 1987 over a six-week period — former CBS head Walter Yetnikoff, Jackson's former managers, and musicians like Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Chris Brown.

"We have footage in this documentary that no one's ever seen, stuff that Michael shot himself, behind-the-scenes stuff," Lee told SF Gate. "We had complete access to the vaults of Michael Jackson... He wrote 60 demos for the Bad record. Only 11 made it. So we got to hear a lot of that stuff, too, so it was just a great experience." If you're not a fan of Jackson's, have no fear. Lee reassures that "you don't have to be a Michael Jackson-head to enjoy this." The singer's mysterious and often strange personal life will undoubtedly be another draw for audiences.

No word on release details yet, but Lee has suggested the film will be seeing a theatrical and home video date. Lee's passion for the musician's work has us hopeful for a fascinating watch.
